You have the story.
I help your book work visually.
Creating an image-heavy book can get complicated fast.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by photos, sequencing, layout decisions,
or visual flow, I help bring clarity to the process and shape the book
into a more cohesive, professional whole.
I work with authors who already have photos, a photographer, or a publishing path underway. My role is to shape the visual side of the book so it feels cohesive, clear, and professional.
Visual editorial support for authors creating image-heavy books, including children’s books, cookbooks, homesteading books, and other visually driven projects.
Why image-heavy books can be hard to pull together
A book can have strong writing, beautiful images, and a worthwhile idea and still not come together on the page. That usually happens when there are too many images, no clear visual hierarchy, weak sequencing, uneven pacing, or a layout that does not support the story well.
For many authors, this is the point where the process starts to feel confusing, expensive, and hard to manage. The visual side of a book carries more weight than most people realize, and weak visual decisions can make a promising book feel amateurish before a reader even understands why.
Too many images and no clear visual hierarchy
The wrong images carrying important moments
Uneven pacing from page to page
A layout that lacks rhythm
Visuals that do not support the emotional arc of the book
How I help shape the visual side of your book
I help authors strengthen the visual side of a book by bringing clarity, structure, and experienced editorial judgment to the images and how they work on the page.
Depending on the project, I can help with:
Photo selection
Sequencing
Visual storytelling
Page flow
Layout guidance
Dummy mockups for designers
Image curation as an add-on service
Photo coaching of photographers in the field
Editorial feedback on pacing, cohesion, and emotional impact
I may also collaborate with your designer, photographer,
or publishing team to help the book feel more unified from beginning to end.
What I don’t do: I don’t act as a publisher, literary agent, self-publishing service, or final production house. I serve as a visual editorial specialist who helps you make stronger decisions so the finished book works better.
About Karin
With more than three decades of experience in photography, picture editing, and visual storytelling, Karin Anderson helps authors make strong decisions about the visual side of image-heavy books.
Earlier in her career, she worked in major metro newsrooms as a staff photographer, picture editor, and Director of Photography — including roles at the Las Vegas Sun, the Copley Sun newspapers in Greater Chicago, and the Detroit Free Press. Her editorial work also appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Across those roles, both her picture editing and the photographers she led earned national and international recognition.
She now brings that same editorial judgment to nonfiction and children’s books, where she has helped lead multiple visually driven book projects to critical success. She helps authors shape image selection, sequencing, pacing, and visual cohesion so the finished book feels clear, credible, and professionally made.

FAQs
-
No. I do not act as a publisher, literary agent, or self-publishing service. I focus on visual editorial support and help authors make stronger decisions about how their book works visually.
-
I don’t serve as the final book designer, but I can provide layout guidance and create simple dummy mockups to help your designer understand pacing, image placement, and visual flow. Your designer or production team would handle final design execution.
-
I can help curate images as an add-on service if that supports the project. Any stock image licensing, usage fees, photographer fees, or related rights costs would be your responsibility.
-
This service is for authors creating image-heavy books who already have images, a photographer, or a publishing path in motion and want expert help with visual editing, sequencing, pacing, and overall cohesion.
-
I’m best suited for visually rich projects such as children’s books, cookbooks, homesteading or lifestyle books, nature-based books, and other image-heavy projects where strong visual storytelling matters.
-
Yes, if you already have a clear project in motion and need visual editorial help. I’m not the right fit for authors looking for someone to manage the entire self-publishing process from start to finish.
-
Ideally, you already have a manuscript or working text, a body of images or a photographer, and at least a basic sense of your publishing direction. You do not need everything finalized, but you should be far enough along that visual decisions are becoming important.
-
Most projects begin with a conversation about your book, your images, and where you are getting stuck. From there, I may review your visuals, provide editorial guidance, suggest sequencing or pacing changes, create simple mockups, and collaborate with your designer or creative team as needed.
-
Every book project is a little different, so I quote this work based on scope and the kind of support you need. Some authors need a single review and clear direction, while others need more involved visual editorial support over time. Because this is specialized, hands-on work, I usually begin with a conversation to understand the project and then recommend the most appropriate scope and investment.
